Our Story

Our Barkery started with a little dog found wandering in a parking lot.
In 2001 I was residing in Charleston, SC. One evening on my way home from work I saw a sad looking dog standing close to my apartment building. Later that evening I mentioned seeing this dog to my roommate who said she had been wandering around for the last couple of days very frightened and she was in terrible shape, so I made the decision to go find her. After two hours of looking, I was frustrated and had tears welling up in my eyes. I suddenly looked up and saw her standing under a street light. As I approached her she ran terrified. I followed at a close distance and finally, exhausted she stopped. I sat down near her and began to talk to her, after a few minutes I moved closer and began to pet her. She was skin and bones, covered with bite marks and fleas, and had very little hair. I continued to talk and asked if I could take her home and get her some help.
The veterinarian’s prognosis was grim. Based on her appearance the doctor estimated she had been wandering for two months and by the look of her feet she had traveled quite a distance. There were no reports of a dog matching her description, she did not have a microchip, and she was an older dog. It seemed she was a “throw-away” and based on her fear of people and her battered body she had been abused and attacked.
I named her Lady Belle. We fought the fleas, worms, fear, dehydration and lack of nutrition. Slowly she regained her strength and her health. Then she started to chew on herself, constantly. We consulted our veterinarian and discovered she had allergies, specifically a wheat allergy.
I began reading labels and finding out what dog food was made up of and quickly found out corn and wheat were both very popular ingredients. By this time I had relocated and settled in Orlando, Florida. I was fortunate to have an excellent veterinarian and a specialty dog store around the corner that carried wheat free products. In 2006 I moved to Greenville and no longer had my special dog store to regularly visit. I had stocked up quite a bit before moving but began to run low on my supply.
In July of 2006 Anna joined us. A vibrant Boykin Spaniel puppy she came from a wonderful family that wanted to find a loving home for this bundle of energy. I had both of my girls and wanted to give them the best. I had them both set on healthy dog food and began to explore preparing their treats myself.
Lady Belle made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge in November 2006 after five wonderful years with us.
As a tribute to her and the joy she brought to my life, my goal became to find a way for other dogs to enjoy a healthy treat without fillers. Thus Tail Waggerz Canine Confections & Barkery was born, for my girls and all of the other boys and girls out there who greet us happily with a wagging tail, wet nose, and lick of the tongue. Now Anna and Bert stand with me while I bake and taste-test each batch.
With Tail Waggerz Canine Confections & Barkery I hope to accommodate dogs with dietary concerns and bring the joy of a special treat with a personal touch. As long as dogs are enjoying our cookies we will continue to bake. Thank you for supporting our Barkery!
